The best has yet to come…Upcoming Art Exhibitions

With the beginning of a new year let’s take a look at art museums across the nation and their notable upcoming exhibitions. Starting with New England I will work my way across the country and relay to you some of the must-see art exhibitions coming up this year. Stay tuned for further installments because the best has yet to come…

 The Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art: Virgil Marti/ MATRIX 167 August 1, 2013 – January 5, 2014

“Textile-based installations engage with high and low culture and, in particular, with the ornamental excesses of interior design, including baroque chandeliers, garish fabric pillows, faux-fur and chintz banquettes, and flocked black-light wallpaper.”

The Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art: Bill Viola: Ascension February 13 – August 11, 2013

“In Ascension, viewed from underwater, a figure violently crashes into a still body of water and hovers in cruciform. Lit by horizontal beams of blue light, the lifeless form slowly rises to the surface before sinking out of view. Viola, a pioneer in the field of video art and a longstanding leader in contemporary art, explores the possibilities of the video medium as an avenue to self-knowledge. Focusing on universal human experiences—birth, death, grief, consciousness—Viola’s work is rooted in both Eastern and Western art as well as spiritual traditions, including Zen Buddhism, Islamic Sufism, and Christian mysticism.”

“These powerful images capture the gritty reality of life on the block between First and Second Avenues, which had been described during the 1950s as the most dangerous in the entire city. Davidson began the project in 1967, when this section of East Harlem was slowly improving. Carrying his bulky, large-format camera and tripod, Davidson returned almost daily for nearly two years recording the strength and diversity of the inhabitants of this Harlem neighborhood.”
