Hope Gangloff: Mundane Modernity

With a mix of painterly brushstrokes and crisp lines, the gorgeous figurative paintings of Hope Gangloff sway between painting and drawing. She depicts the everyday as a sumptuous environment of color and pattern; the despondent figures merging and entangling with their surroundings. The figures appear melancholic and aloof, as Gangloff captures them in mundane moments, such as painting their toenails and soaking in a bathtub. The figure’s angular limbs, gaunt faces, and sickly pallor are evocative of Egon Schiele, but Gangloff’s use of abundant, intricate patterning is distinctively her own. Gangloff’s paintings, primarily portraits of her friends, serve as a documentation of contemporary American life. They are intimate glimpses into the lives of others; a record of daily routines, blank stares, and uninhibited boredom and repose.
